Under the technology category, on the software forum...

the description is "Talk about software here - Windows, Linux, Notepad++, stuff like that."

knowing that, Windows nor Linux is a software, and that they are an operating SYSTEM... why did you guys do that :)

Yeah, there should be an Internet board and a sub-board for O.S in Software

Because it's the best fitting description.
And it's not hardware, so it's software.

A software doesn't get close to wat a system is... a software RUNS INSIDE a system.

And gmail is a software. Just because it runs in a web browser doesnt make it not a software.j

take the TYREUS forums as an example, they have good categorys and forums.

Both Gmail, Windows and Linux is indeed software. The terms "x-ware" are abstract, and in this case, "software" covers 3 types of software categories, System Software (Windows, Linux), Programming Software (Editors, Compilers) and Application Software (Video games, Office etc.).
Then there's another group called Web software (Gmail), which often is seen as a subgroup of application software.

Initially, the term software was coined in contrast to hardware, where hardware was something that could be touched (I.e. CPU, RAM etc.), whereas software is what runs inside the hardware, and cannot be touched. You can touch RAM, but you can't touch an OS.

well, OBVIOUSLY THE USERS are not going to think about that.

Honestly, I think most of niftyhost's users would be able to comprehend OS's as being software. Besides, we can't have a million categories anyway, so people just have to pick the places that logically seems to be best fit for their threads.
