Initially, the term software was coined in contrast to hardware, where hardware was something that could touches (I.e. CPU, RAM etc.), whereas software is what runs inside the hardware, and cannot be touched. You can touch RAM, but you can't touch an OS.

well, OBVIOUSLY THE USERS are not going to think about that.
