Well, in case you don't understand, a VPS is basically a virtual machine running on a physical server with some sort of virtualization technology (most commonly, Xen or OpenVZ). The physical server could run a lot of such virtual servers all at once. Each virtual machine act like a physical server (that's why it's called "virtual private server"), and the resources of the physical server is separated between the virtual servers running on it.
