If the government found intelligent alien life should it keep the findings a secret?

I don't know where people got the wrong connotation that all alien species are scary, will invade the earth, kidnap human beings and turn them into slaves. Oh wait, right - stupid Hollywood movies. I think, if the top-secret government agencies found proof that aliens do exist, they should tell the public. Aren't everyone, and I mean everyone, curious about that from the beginning of time? I know I am!
