Anybody know about LiteSpeed Web Server? - Vanilla - 12-02-2010 I just came across this LiteSpeed server thing, and from judging from their website, it's supposed to be kinda like Apache, just much better. I've always thought Apache to be best regarding server software (atleast compared to IIS), but is it really that good? http://www.litespeedtech.com/ According to this, it has all sorts of nice stuff built in, plus it's compatible with most software available on apache: http://www.litespeedtech.com/litespeed-vs-apache.html - Can anybody with experience with it enlighten me, regarding this? RE: Anybody know about LiteSpeed Web Server? - 2348z - 12-02-2010 I've heard of it, but never used it :( lol RE: Anybody know about LiteSpeed Web Server? - Zach - 12-02-2010 I have heard of it. We do not use it because it is not compatible with cPanel, I believe. RE: Anybody know about LiteSpeed Web Server? - RichardGv - 12-02-2010 Huh, Zack, actually they claimed it's cPanel-compatible directly on the homepage... But I hate closed-source software... Partially because I cannot use special optimization flags during compilation. :D It's surprising (or depressing) that they don't even provide a free x64 build for Linux. On a x64 processor (well, almost all recent processors are) the performance of a x86 system could be lower than a x86_64 system for 10%-20%. And after all, commercial software tends to have very exaggerated description. I remember there are so many commercial download managers that claim able to accelerate download by 600%, which is esentially impossible. :) Also, nginx seems faster and less resource-intensive, according to what I heard. It does not read Apache configuration, though. lighttpd seems a pretty popular alternative, too. RE: Anybody know about LiteSpeed Web Server? - Matt - 12-03-2010 Actually Zack, cPanel is compatible with LiteSpeed server (I know this because I have a hosting account hosted on a server with LiteSpeed on it for one of my design clients). However, I'm pretty sure Apache has been around for a lot longer than LiteSpeed and has the security and rock-solid stability we've come to know and trust for years. Besides, Apache has a better logo. Mind you, I wouldn't mind opening up a development server and testing LiteSpeed out on that... |
