Zack: You can enable them... They are just not enabled out-of-the-box.

RE: IRC Client of Choice? - trainhappy - 05-22-2010

I use the firefox ChatZilla plugin

RE: IRC Client of Choice? - austin - 05-22-2010

I use good old Pidgin, because I can connect to MSN and Gtalk with it, too.

RE: IRC Client of Choice? - Zach - 05-22-2010

Pidgin is a crap IRC client, I've learned.

RE: IRC Client of Choice? - KSubedi - 06-13-2010

RE: IRC Client of Choice? - rafly - 12-29-2010

Irssi. Fast, elegant, extensible, and does not crash when I restart X server. :D
  1. My computer is severely short of memory (well, 1GB is just not enough if you compile something everyday), and irssi uses a (relatively) tiny bit of memory. Typically 7MB or less.
  2. Irssi can be easily extended with Perl scripts.
  3. Irssi has little library dependencies, and works when all other clients don't, like what Zack pointed out. Well, unfortunately irssi does not run on iPod or phones, but as a poor Chinese (instead of a rich American :D) I have neither of them.
  4. I always have a paranoid will to do everything in the terminal or framebuffer. :)
  5. Using irssi makes me look like a Linux expert, even though I'm only a beginner. :D

I used to use MiRC a lot, its really easy to use with many functions.

When not using my pc i use Mibbit, a web browser based irc client :P, so doesn't require any installations
