RE: We're bringing hosting back! - Serial Thrilla - 07-25-2012

It's good to see that Niftyhost is back in the business.

I'm a bit worried about the provider of the VPS. I have made a research about the company "EaseVPS" on Google. The reviews I have found were quite old though so I think the problems that EaseVPS had back then are gone. At least I hope that everything is going to be well with EaseVPS. If something should go wrong I have a page full of providers which could be quite useful for Niftyhost (*search for more sponsors*). Is Jacob from EaseVPS here, actually? Or how have you got that deal? LEB/LET (Lowendbox/talk)?

It's a OpenVZ VPS with the kernel 2.6.18 :(. This OpenVZ-kernel is horrible and pretty old. The memory management is extremely & insanely bad. Atleast you have a decent amount of RAM. You could save a lot of memory when the VPS would have the newer OpenVZ-kernel 2.6.32 which has a great memory management. The current kernel can be very very trick and dangerous.

My ultra crappy low-end hardcore oversold free VPS with Nginx:

Only 5MB RAM used with a proper Nginx configuration (Debian 6 tweaked). But meh, take a look at how bad the VPS actually is: http://freevps.us/thread-4855.html and if you want I can show you even more magic. A nice script made by the FreeVPS staffs that runs Nginx, MySQL & PHP with PHP-FPM and uses less than 100MB RAM on a VPS/dedicated server.

RE: We're bringing hosting back! - Zach - 07-25-2012

I'm more than familiar with running in not enough RAM. This website is running on a KVM VPS with 128MB RAM.

I'd like to optimize memory usage, but the issue is that DirectAdmin requires an exact LAMP setup and I'm still not too sure how it works. I could shave a few hundred MB off here and there.

I've forwarded your suggestions to Jacob.

RE: We're bringing hosting back! - Serial Thrilla - 07-25-2012

Sorry, I don't think that Jacob can do a lot :P.

He would have to upgrade the whole node (well, upgrade host OS and OpenVZ version) to get you the advantage of saving RAM.

Kernel 2.6.32 is marked as instable which is not true. It is stable as long as you don't oversell the node as hell.

:')

Weep tears of joy. You should idle in IRC with us instead of just popping in and leaving before anyone can say hi. :)
