It's actually quite simple, on some forums they allow you to include your url in your signature or allow you to advertise websites in specific area's of the forum. There is also Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and a couple of more social networks that allow you to advertise urls. Furthermore, you can share the url with friends, college's and anyone else that would appreciate it :)

But please don't use sites where you can get some random people to sign up for you with strange domains as ref and so on, that's just cheating but it's faked.
