I previously posted this thread on another forum. Nobody ever replied there, as if they don't actually know anything about it. Hopefully I won't meet the same situation here.

Hmm, yeah, yet another boring poll thread I post... :)
This time I would like to know how much time your system takes to boot. This can be measured with a little clock in your hand (old & reliable), Bootchart (Linux-only), or BootTimer (Windows). (Well, actually a MBR rootkit should be most effective in measuring boot time. :D )

My boot time is 17 seconds, not including GRUB loading time, on Gentoo Linux amd64, OpenRC 0.6.4 with parallel RC enabled. (OpenRC is fast, indeed.) I also use prelink to accelerate binary executions.
(Keep in mind I'm using a old traditional HDD, not SSD. If I have a SSD, the time can be shortened to 10 seconds or so, I guess. X does not autostart during boot process.)

systemd and readahead-list may be very helpful for further improvements of boot speed. However, systemd is too heavily experimental, while readahead-list has not been updated since 2006.
(This chart is slightly old. As I switched back to nouveau (from the blob nvidia-drivers) with framebuffer. But it shouldn't be a big issue.)

Huh, that seems impossible. Somebody managed to boot Lucid in 11 seconds, but it's a laptop with SSD. Upstart is pretty fast, but it's not necessarily faster than OpenRC.

Read the instructions in the link I gave you!

Then reboot. The bootchart can be found in /var/log/bootchart .

My iPod touch starts up in about 30 seconds (from powerdown), and my dad's laptop starts in about the same time, with Win7 installed.

However i can assure you that's wrong, i'd say it's about 2 minutes, i'll check later.

What's the effect of the time difference?

My PC boot time should be around 20 secs.
