I'm really into Internet Marketing with Wordpress blogs and micro-niche sites.
When registering a domain, ALWAYS register it for 3+ years. When Google see's that, it highers your search rank higher than those who only bought one year. Why? For the obvious reason - if you spent more money to buy a domain for more than one year, they only know that you will last long and it's worth putting you higher in search results.
That is ALWAYS the second step! First time is picking a great domain name as listed in the original post.
