I use good old Pidgin, because I can connect to MSN and Gtalk with it, too.

Pidgin is a crap IRC client, I've learned.

Irssi. Fast, elegant, extensible, and does not crash when I restart X server. :D
- My computer is severely short of memory (well, 1GB is just not enough if you compile something everyday), and irssi uses a (relatively) tiny bit of memory. Typically 7MB or less.
- Irssi can be easily extended with Perl scripts.
- Irssi has little library dependencies, and works when all other clients don't, like what Zack pointed out. Well, unfortunately irssi does not run on iPod or phones, but as a poor Chinese (instead of a rich American :D) I have neither of them.
- I always have a paranoid will to do everything in the terminal or framebuffer. :)
- Using irssi makes me look like a Linux expert, even though I'm only a beginner. :D

I used to use MiRC a lot, its really easy to use with many functions.
When not using my pc i use Mibbit, a web browser based irc client :P, so doesn't require any installations
